OpenInsight for Web (O4W) Form Designer

New to OpenInsight 10 will be a WYSIWYG Form Designer.  The O4W Form Designer will provide the ability to nest DIVs within DIVs.  This will allow developers complete control of the placement of controls on the form.  The O4W Form Designer will support controls for Toolbars, Buttons, Content Layout, Form Elements, Lists, Images and Tabs. Properties for each control will be maintained in the Property Panel.

Revelation Software named in DBTA 100 2015 - Companies That Matter Most in Data

DBTA 100 2015

The world of information technology is often described as an ecosystem. And just like an ecosystem that exists in nature, IT is affected by internal and external factors. In this issue of Database Trends and Applications magazine, we introduce the third annual list of companies that matter in data, a reflection of the IT ecosystem as it exists now.

In the last 2–3 years there have been dramatic changes in IT. Data is being created and amassed at higher rates than ever before, and is increasingly viewed as a valued asset, or even a product itself. Newer information management technologies, such as Hadoop and cloud, a variety of open source offerings, as well as NoSQL and NewSQL, are gaining traction and enabling insights from data generated inside and outside company walls. However, as has been the case for many years, relational database management systems continue to be powerful forces. In addition to relational systems, MultiValue database technology, another established approach, continues to evolve with new capabilities and integrations. Research reports produced over the past year by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today, Inc., have provided insight into many of the pressing issues affecting data management. According to a recent Unisphere survey sponsored by Dell Software, two-thirds of the respondents indicated that structured data represents at least 75% of the data under management.

At the same time, Hadoop-based offerings as well as new database products offer organizations a way to leverage a wide array of unstructured data. Nearly 10% of respondents to the survey said their companies are already using a NoSQL database technology and 12% are currently deploying it. Slightly more than 15% are using Hadoop, with a little more than 5% in the deployment process. In terms of the volume of data that organizations are dealing with, the survey revealed that close to 30% are managing more than 500TB (“The Real World of the Database Administrator”).

Data is seen more than ever before as a valuable enterprise resource. But, with the intertwined issues of high data volume, more data sources, and emerging data management technologies, there are questions about who will take charge of data management in the enterprise. The findings of another Unisphere Research survey, sponsored by Ntirety, a division of HOSTING, were included in a report, “The Vanishing Database Administrator: A Survey of Data Professionals’ Career Aspirations.” The survey found that more than two-fifths of data professionals expect to leave the field within the next decade, either due to retirement or to move into business roles.

Maximize your Remote Desktop Services

Giorgio Bonuccelli, Marketing Director of Parallels has published an article titled Maximize your Remote Desktop Services that we at Revelation Software find extremely informative when deploying an OpenInsight application over a Wide Area Network (WAN).

An Overview of Remote Desktop Services

Virtualization has added facets to information technology. Today, businesses look not only at optimizing business resources, but also at management of when, where and how data are accessed. Remote networks are among the aspects of IT that need attention. Nowadays, remote desktop services (RDS) allow businesses to deliver secure remote services to end users effectively.

What are Remote Desktop Services?

RDS is a component of the Windows Server operating system, and was formerly known as terminal services in Windows Server 2008 and earlier versions. It enables users to remotely access a computer or a virtual machine on a network. With RDS, any computer that supports remote desktop protocol can remotely access the full desktop and Windows software. Windows NT 4.0 first featured RDS in the form of terminal services, which improved with every new version of Windows Server OS. Microsoft added advanced remote desktop features to terminal services and changed the name to Remote Desktop Services in Windows Server 2008 R2 edition and Windows Server 2012. Today, users can take advantage of RDS to access corporate networks from the comfort of their homes.

Tech Tip

How to create an O4W dialog box using local pagination

If you are building a dialog box or using an existing popup in O4W with a high record count, you may want to consider building each page of the dialog box locally.  This will save on the time it takes the browser to build the dialog box because it will only need to build one page at a time.  The way it works is, you set the default paginator on the O4W Configuration screen to one of the local paginator choices or alternatively, you set the ‘overridePage’ parameter in the O4WTablePagerOptions API to ‘O4WI_TABLEPAGERLOCAL’.  Setting this flag will send an event to your O4W program when the next/previous arrows are clicked as well as any time a column is clicked that is set for sorting.
